My Practice

My practice is devoted to helping children and adults who have concerns about learning, attention, mood, or behavior. I provide in-office evaluations as well as phone and online consultations.

Evaluations

Need answers? Schedule an in-office assessment.

Comprehensive psycho-educational assessments to determine learning profiles of children and adults struggling with academic, cognitive, memory, behavioral, or attention skills.

Developmental assessments for students aged 5 and older to evaluate the social, behavioral, thinking, and other “readiness” skills.

I take an individualized, evidence-based, hypothesis-testing approach to assessment. That is a fancy way of saying that I don’t use the same tests for every client. I choose tests that I think will best answer the client’s questions. I make my best guesses, test my theories, and choose the next step based on what I find out. I start with a broad view–it’s important not to get “stuck” on a single pathway or potential diagnosis too early. Some students have multiple less severe issues that add up to a lot of stress. Others have a major issue like anxiety or a learning disability that affects many areas. For others a lag in skill development seems to suddenly cause problems when demands increase and they can no longer keep up. I place a high value on psychometric quality and use well validated assessment tools. In other words, I make sure I use good tests.

Numbers and diagnoses can help paint a picture but they never fully describe individuals. My reports include between 40 and 100 scores. These are clues, not facts. Like colors on a palette, they help paint a picture of a person’s thinking and learning skills. Colors don’t paint a picture by themselves. They need a canvas, brushes, and someone to put them all together. Similarly, numbers alone don’t provide all the answers. I need a lot of other clues–observations, history, teacher comments, work samples, grades.
